February Note From Zaki

 February 18, 2015

Dear IMA Parents
I hope your Presidents Day weekend was great and you were able to take time from your busy schedule to rest. Our teachers and staff attended the AMI Refresher course this weekend and have brought back valuable information to share. I hope some of you were able to attend.
Due to the growing number of families with two or more children enrolled at IMA, we have decided to introduce a sibling discount of 10% for each additional child enrolled from the same family. We hope this will lessen the financial burden on parents with multiple children enrolled at the school. As our IMA family continues to grow, we would like to congratulate those who have had recent additions to their families and welcome them into our midst.
Thank you to those families who have re enrolled for the 2015-16 academic school year. We are delighted to have you continue our partnership in the development of your children. For those of you who have not enrolled and have questions about next school year, I am available to answer your questions via email or phone, or you may schedule an appointment to meet with me.
Please be reminded that we follow DeKalb County school calendar for school closures in inclement weather. There will be instances like yesterday when closing school cannot be justified even though DeKalb County Schools are closed. In these instances we will inform parents via email, website postings, and through Fox 5 News and 11 Alive of any delays and or closures.
Registration for summer camp will begin on March 1, 2015. It will be on a first come, first serve basis. It will be fun filled with lots of extracurricular activities including Arts and Crafts, Lego Robotics, Science, Music, Gardening, Cooking and water play. Registration forms and flyers will be available next week.
Montessori Week (2/22 – 2/28/15)
Parent Appreciation Breakfast (2/27/15)
Earth Day (4/22/15)
The first half of this academic school year has been a challenging one with the fall in enrollment from last year. However, enrollment has now increased school wide. Our goal is to have a waiting list for our overall program by August 2015. This will ensure financial stability and longevity for our IMA community. The children are thriving, the staff are happy and have never been more committed and passionate about their work. Our school family came together collectively to rebuild.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you parents for your trust and commitment to IMA, especially those of you who have volunteered your time and energy to work with faculty and staff
Thank you for holding our IMA Community so close to your hearts.
In Peace

January Letter from Zaki

                                                                                                                     January 8. 2015
Dear Parents,

Thank you all for an exciting and productive first half of the year. On behalf of the Administration, faculty and staff, we want you all to know how much your support and dedication has enriched the life of our school. We look forward to 2015 with excitement and anticipation for our future plans and growth.

As we make plans for our Elementary program, I would like feedback from parents about their plans for their children’s elementary education. Please let me know if you intend to have your child continue at IMA, should we establish an Elementary program. I have heard from a few parents already but would like more feedback.

I am very happy to announce that we are expanding our music program to include group violin. There will not be any charge for this program as it will be part of the IMA curriculum. It will be available to children who turn five years on or before January 31, 2015.
I met with Jewel Zambrano, our violin teacher this morning and she is very excited about the opportunity to establish and grow IMA’s music program. Ms. Zambrano holds a Masters Degree in Violin Performance, with Emphasis on String Pedagogy. She has been teaching violin since age 17. She is currently a violin teacher at Waldorf School of Atlanta, where she teaches children in grades 2 through 8. Please join me in welcoming her to our IMA family.

Ms. Lorena Gomez, resigned her position as Nido Teacher to take on a position as toddler teacher at AMIS. While we are sad to see her go, we understand her need to be with her son who attends AMIS. We wish her, the very best!  I am happy to announce that Ms. Remzije, our current Teacher in the Lilies class, will be taking on the position of Nido Teacher. The current students in her class will transition into the Butterflies toddler classroom.

Several parents have enquired about re enrollment for the next school year. We will send out a re enrollment packet on Monday, January 12th, 2015. Please be on the lookout for them. The signed contracts are due back February 2nd, 2015.

Social Arts Atlanta approached us about renting the auditorium on Fridays and Sundays from 5:00pm to 9:30pm, January through June of 2015. SAA is an etiquette and social dance training company for children, which believes that through the guidance of dance and etiquette students gain the necessary tools to meet success both professionally and personally. The overarching philosophy is that good manners make life better and should be a part of each day. In an effort to support our local community and because their basic philosophy is in line with Montessori, we have agreed to lease the space to them for this period.

Thank you for all you and your family bring to our IMA community.  Best wishes for a happy, healthy new year.

November Letter from Zaki

 November 7, 2014

Dear Parents,

I would first of all like to thank those of you who have over the past several weeks given me positive feedback about the improvements you are seeing in our school community. I am grateful for your input as it helps reinforce to me that the school is moving in the right direction. Some of you have offered your support in the areas of marketing, building and grounds and communications, others have offered to help organize events. Thank you for your support as we continue to build our AMISC community. These are some of the changes and improvements you will be seeing over the next few months.

I will continue to send out monthly letters to you, around the first week of every month. This will contain important updates about school happenings. In addition to this I will resume my monthly coffees with parents to discuss and share future plans for the school. Janis will send out weekly notes to inform and/or remind parents of upcoming events and activities. Monthly newsletters will cover classroom news and happenings. We will continue to make every effort to ensure the timely dissemination of information.

The similarity in the school name with that of the main campus has caused a lot of confusion for prospective parents as well as marketing challenges. We would like to resort to our school’s legal name “International Montessori Academy”. We feel that this will differentiate us from the main campus and also give this campus an individual identity. Please feel free to come to me with your comments or suggestions. We are looking to officially transition to the new name in the next few weeks.
Grand Parents/Special Friends Day                            Friday, November 21, 2014
International Potluck Dinner                                     Saturday, December 6, 2014
YCC Curriculum Night                                               Tuesday, November 11, 2014
Over the past few months I have had concerns from staff and some neighbors of trespassers entering our property during school hours and on weekends. In light of these complaints we are considering fencing in the property. I am looking for volunteers to undertake this project. Please let me know if you are able and willing to undertake this. Thanking you in advance.
Lastly, thank you to those parents who have shown concern and have enquired about my family back home in Sierra Leone. I have been in the US since the summer and my family is here too. We are all well and doing fine. However I do have acquaintances, friends, and extended family back home. They are all safe, I do not know anyone personally that have been directly impacted. I feel extremely sad that a country that I love so dearly will be plagued with this virus. Unfortunately it is the poor and disadvantaged who are falling ill and dying as are medical staff. For the safety of my family and those I come in contact with, I do not plan to travel to the region until the epidemic has been contained. Thank you again for the concern you have shown. For now we can only pray for the nations involved.
In Peace,
Zakiatu Swaray-Rowe

Weekly Newsletter: Change is a comin’ AMIS-CP!

This week as you came into the school to drop off your kids, you probably noticed 3 rather large squares of paint on the wall.  No, this is not one of the kid’s summer camp projects, even though that would be silly!  We are actually painting the front desk area of school!  This is just the beginning of many changes you will slowly see around campus as we continue to create a special community for our children...
